To make an album from scratch all on your own is a big undertaking. It’s a very delicate balance and it is something that takes a long time. Perhaps the most impressive thing about Abandoned World is that John DeGrazio truly is the creator from start to finish. Aside from a couple of guest appearances from musicians and the always brilliant Steven Delopoulos, every fiber of this album was created by DeGrazio. He plays all the instruments – guitars, bass, drums, piano, synthesizers, percussion, and vocals. Then there is the technical side of it: he recorded, produced, and mixed it completely on his own. He also wrote and arranged the songs — a difficult thing to be successful at by itself.

In a studio that looks as complex as a spacecraft, he knows what every button does. He runs the computers, knows all the programs, the numerous synthesizers, the mixing board, guitar amplifiers, microphones – the list goes on. What it all boils down to is that he knows how to deliver when it comes to the final product. Abandoned World is a stellar album and after the zillionth listen, I am still amazed that he did this the way he did, and I guess that’s what makes it so enjoyable. There’s a depth and passion here that is seldom heard anywhere else.

As a listener, you can really get into DeGrazio’s head because this album is completely his brainchild. The songs are dynamic, intricate, and sometimes scary. They will take you through a myriad of emotions – the sounds are haunting, his lyrics so relatable at times that they reach out of the speakers and grab your soul. His voice is so captivating and smooth; original and unpredictable. The album as a whole has a very unusual approach, yet the message is simple to understand. And my message to you is to go get the album. Abandoned World will definitely become one of your favorites.
